Black History Month

The movie color purple is about an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After main character Celie’s abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing “Mister” Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. The movie follows her along through her life and how she copes with a hope that she has been clinging on to her entire life. I feel as if this movie serves as a great piece to black history month because it gives out a reality of how some women grew up in the 1910s-1940s. Most of the women stayed at home and served as care giver and maid. Also the main character Whoopi Goldberg who serves as celie is a very iconic and well known public figure too and for African Americans. She has won grammys , golden globes, NAACP etc. Being such a good actress and looked up too she was perfect for the role and to show and inform people of how some African americans grew up in the south and the hardships they faced.
