Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday , which happens at least once every year but can occur up to three times in the same year. n 2017, it occurred twice, on January 13 and October 13. In 2018, it will also occur twice on April 13 and July 13. There will be two Friday the 13ths every year until 2020, where 2021 and 2022 will have just one occurrence, in August and May respectively. The fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name: “triskaidekaphobia”; and on analogy to this the fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, from the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning “Friday”), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning “thirteen”). The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, “originating from the story of Jesus’ last supper and crucifixion” in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.

Black History Month

The movie color purple is about an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After main character Celie’s abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing “Mister” Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. The movie follows her along through her life and how she copes with a hope that she has been clinging on to her entire life. I feel as if this movie serves as a great piece to black history month because it gives out a reality of how some women grew up in the 1910s-1940s. Most of the women stayed at home and served as care giver and maid. Also the main character Whoopi Goldberg who serves as celie is a very iconic and well known public figure too and for African Americans. She has won grammys , golden globes, NAACP etc. Being such a good actress and looked up too she was perfect for the role and to show and inform people of how some African americans grew up in the south and the hardships they faced.

Superbowl Commercial Analysis

This commercial is featured for Toyota. Feel-good ads are a thing in 2018, and this Paralympics-themed spot is one of the feel-goodest. A girl is born with incomplete legs, and an onscreen ticker starts registering her long odds of winning a gold medal. As scenes from her life play out, the girl becomes eight-time Canadian gold-medal skier Lauren Woolstencroft, and the odds change to even. The message and viewpoint of the commercial. I think the commerical wasnt very effective to the audinece because its very easy to miss the point that was given.  I think overall it sends a great message and a positive attitude to motivate people to always believe and keep pushing. At the end of the commerical it shows different machines and the start for a car turning into a person. Alouthugh i think this commerical sends a positive message, bbut having toyota as the fauture makes  no sense. I had to watch and think about it countless times to get the message.

This commercial is sponsored for Tide. They are a detergent company. The commercial messages is to be humorous by showing all different scenarios of all the Superbowl ads that usually pop up. But in each scene every person is wearing very clean clothes. This commercial was very effective in getting the audience attention because it had humor and something that everyone could relate too.

This commercial is sponsored by amazon alexa. The commercial is meant to have humor and also promote there new alexa. Alexa is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Amazon. Alexa talks back and answers to your commands. In the video , alexa voice ‘stops working’ so they use celebrities to fill in for her job. I think this has a huge effect on the audience attention because alexa is very popular now and plus they used popular celebrities right now.

Play-Doh Creation

For my play-doh creation i remade the IHSA Cheerleading trophy awarded to the top three teams in the final competition for competitive cheerleading at state. I chose to create the trophy because it is one of my biggest goal in life at the moment to win or at least make podium with my team. I dedicated so much time and effort into cheerleading. My team and I have worked so hard to make it to these final and most important days. Making state was also a very big achievement for us which has pushed to work even harder.  The trophy also represents me succeeding in school and my goals. It has pushed me too not only pass but to succeed in school to my highest ability. Being motivated so much i have reached some of my academic goals that i thought i wasn’t capable of. By being supportive and motivating the trophy also represents my team in general.   My other classmates made play-doh creations that had to deal with their favorite foods, sports and activities. I think some of my classmates also made creations that had to do with multiple meaning like mine did. This assignment and activity relates to the writing process because you have to analyze and brainstorm a lot. I had to think of what would represent me in not just one way but multiple. Knowing that other students would see my creation, rhetorical situation played into it because i had to also make something they would understand and know.

I believe that the Death Penalty should be legal but only for horrific crimes with undeniable  evidence. Though i do side with the fact that too many innocent people today are convicted with crimes they didn’t commit, that is  why I say with undeniable evidence.  But there is also other punishments that are just as harsh that can be put upon the person. Image result for death penalty

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude. An annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in October. My family celebrates thanksgiving by cooking turkey, ham, chicken and a whole bunch of side dishes and desserts. Thanksgiving for us is about coming together as a family and enjoying each other company. Some of our traditions are our special mac and cheese and dressing (stuffing) recipes. We also host karaoke and play games. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because I am grateful for all my family members and being able to be with them and share food and happiness. A lot of other people I am close with also celebrate this holiday the way my family does.

Positive Current News

On New Year’s Eve in 1968, two Marines made each other a promise. Five decades later, Master Sgt. William H. Cox made good on one more. Retired Marines Master Sgt. William H. Cox and First Sgt. James Hollingsworth first met while hiding from rockets and mortars in a bunker in 1968. Fearing they would not make it out alive, the men – who at the time were strangers – made a pact. The pact being that if they both survived the war, they would contact one another every year on New Year’s Eve for a chat. And they did exactly that for the next five decades. Earlier this year, a now 83-year-old Cox made the trip from his home in South Carolina to say goodbye to his dying friend, Hollingsworth, in Georgia. It was then that he was asked to make one final promise – to stand guard over his coffin and deliver the eulogy at his funeral. I think this article is neutral and anyone can read and understand it. I think this article is positive because it explains a bond and a real friendship between two.
